LEICESTER – New York State Police arrested a Leicester woman for allegedly driving drunk after she struck a tractor trailer near the entrance to Letchworth State Park late Thursday night.
Ashley VanGraafeiland, 23, was arrested for misdemeanor Driving While Intoxicated and traffic violations and infractions: Unlicensed Operator, Failure to Keep Right, and No Seatbelt.
“She was ejected and sustained injuries to the head, facial injuries and an arm injury,” said Trooper Craig Bianchi at the scene in the early hours of Friday morning. “She was intoxicated. We could smell alcohol on her and there were empty beer bottles in the vehicle.”
First responders arrived at the scene on Mount Morris Road near the Letchworth State Park entrance to find a tractor trailer off the shoulder of the southbound lane and an SUV off the shoulder of the northbound lane. A nearly two-hour investigation concluded that VanGraafeiland was headed northbound in the southbound lane of Mount Morris Road when she struck a southbound tractor trailer at about 11 p.m.
“The truck driver obviously tried to get out of the way as much as possible,” said Bianchi. “She struck his driver’s side fuel tank, scraped the side of his trailer, struck his back wheels, dislodging the rear wheels from the trailer, ran off the road into a fence and was ejected.”
VanGraafeiland is scheduled to appear in Leicester Town Court to answer the charges at a later date.
Police said that the truck driver will not be charged.
The Livingston County Sheriff’s Office’s Forensic Identification Unit and Commercial Vehicle Inspectors assisted with the investigation. Mount Morris Police and New York State Park Police responded to the scene as first responders.
