‘Convincing’ Bank Scam Sends Mail to Geneseo

GENESEO – The Geneseo Police Department is investigating a convincing fake bank statement sent to a Geneseo resident.

According to a press release from Geneseo Police Chief Eric Osganian, the scammer apparently created a fake Citizen’s Bank statement that used the resident’s name saying that the resident had $600 in an account. The suspicion is that the scammer wanted the resident to call the number listed on the document to withdraw the money and disclose sensitive account information as part of a ‘verification process.’

“It was a very convincing fake but the resident was understandably suspicious of it,” said Osganian. “If you receive an unexpected letter like this from a bank you are not used to dealing with, we encourage you to check with your bank and call us immediately.”

The bank letter listed a checking account and transaction details, with an account number. All information was fabricated.
