According to our sources, a toaster was the cause of the fire that “totaled” the home at 6571 Hoes Hill Rd., Conesus, where Conesus Highway Superintendent Stephen Martucio and Conesus Town Councilwoman Anita Martucio resided.
Six fire companies responded to the fire which occurred shortly after 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 13: Conesus, Sparta, Springwater, Groveland, Dansville, and East Avon. Livonia and Dansville provided EMS services. The fire was brought under control in about an hour, although winter weather hampered firefighters in responding to the fire, which was already a very hot working fire when they arrived. One
firefighter had to be taken to the hospital by the Livonia ambulance with minor injuries.
Reportedly, Mrs. Martucio had just returned from her barn, and when she went to open the house door, she noticed severe smoke and intense heat, making it impossible to re-enter the home. Several pets died or were missing after the fire. The Martucios are temporarily living in a home near the highway barns. Members of the Conlon-Mulvaney Legion Post assisted in readying the temporary home and are organizing other help for the Martucios.
A Conesus Fire Department member suggested anyone wishing to help should call the Conlon-Mulvaney American Legion Post at 346-4144 for more information on how to help the Martucios.
