CONESUS – A Cosesus resident has been arrested on felony Welfare Fraud charges.
According to a press release from Livingston County Sheriff Thomas Dougherty, Bryan Smith, 54 was arrested for Grand Larceny in the Fourth Degree, Welfare Fraud in the Fourth Degree, and Misuse of Food Stamps.
It is alleged that Smith signed up for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) food stamp program, but started working without notifying the Livingston County Department of Social Services (DSS) that he was increasing his income.
The alleged extra cost to DSS was $1,388 between June 2014 and December 2014.
The investigation and arrest were handled by Sheriff’s Investigator Dan Rittenhouse of the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division. Smith will answer the charges at Mount Morris Town Court at a later date.
Sheriff Dougherty added that to anyone with any information in regards to people whom may be receiving benefits through the Livingston County Department of Social Services fraudulently should please contact the Livingston County Department of Social Services at 585-243-7300 or the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office at 585-243-7100.
