Town of Canandaigua computers came under attack by hackers on Monday, October 12, according to Town Manager Doug Finch.
The hackers managed to assess the town’s main programs which include publicly available documents, resolutions, minutes, and other files. The hackers locked the files and tried to extort the town for money to unlock them.. However, the town had a clean copy of the information to reinstall on the computers, and so will not be paying the ransom. Authorities were called.
No personal information was assessed. Payments made online are kept on a different computer, and so, o personal financial or employee information was exposed, either.
The Town of Canandaigua recently was awarded a grant from the state Division of Homeland Security & Emergency Services to conduct a risk assessment analysis in anticipation of such an attack. Although the grant task was not yet complete, completing that task is now underway.
The next Canandaigua Town Board meeting is at 6 p.m. Oct. 19 at Town Hall., with the agenda including an update on the progress of the grant and hacking incident.
