GENESEO – Geneseo’s Volleyball team has been on fire this season, and continue to dominate on the court. Head Coach Christopher Butera proudly leads this successful team, and last week celebrated his 100th victory as coach of the Geneseo team.
Butera says that his success is exciting, but the real reward is the bonds that form between the coach, the players, and their families.
“I enjoy coaching the girls I teach and see at Geneseo everyday,” said Butera. “I have built many relationships with families throughout the years, and that is one of the best things about coaching.”
His 100th win is just another notch on his list of accolades as a coach. Butera brought the volleyball program back from a drought of losing seasons. With his guidance, the team has transformed into a competitive presence at every game they play. This was capped last season with a Sectional victory, the first for the program in 27 years.
Butera balances his Coaching successes with being a Special Education Teacher at the high school level for Geneseo, as well as leading a club volleyball team going on 5 years.
Even with all of the victories, Butera does not settle. “I try to talk to as many coaches as possible and learn more about the game,” said Butera. “I always work hard to become a better coach.”
Working with young people is one of Butera’s most enjoyable aspects of coaching, a fitting companion to his love of teaching.
“I got into it because I love the sport of volleyball and working with kids,” said Coach Butera. “At Geneseo I saw a need for a volleyball coach, and jumped at the chance.”
Coach Butera plans on staying at Geneseo, to foster even more love and admiration for the sport.
“I really have no aspirations to coach anywhere else right now,” added Butera. “It’s great to see the volleyball community grow in our small district, and to know I have been a part of it.”
