The dictionary defines normal as “conforming to a type, standard, or regular pattern.” Over the past two and a half months, since Governor Cuomo declared a state of emergency, we have had to grapple with this term and relearn what it means. We have had to adapt our morning routines, workdays, birthday parties, graduations and so much more. It has not been easy, as the COVID-19 pandemic is ever-evolving. Fortunately, we are on this journey together as a community.
So many lives have been lost or affected that it is sometimes hard to remain optimistic. However, we have witnessed many acts of caring and generosity in all our neighborhoods. This has been uplifting for all of us. We have seen a collaboration of private and public sectors to create personal protective equipment (PPE) and sanitizers. Community organizations and volunteers are conducting food drives. Our farmers hosting milk giveaways, donating thousands of gallons of milk to members of our community. Towns and fire departments are giving away tens of thousands of masks. School staffs are distributing food to students. Members of the communities have come together to celebrate birthdays and high school graduations with parades. I am proud to have participated in many of these events. So much good is coming from a difficult situation.
Last week I received 100 gallons of NYS Clean hand sanitizer from the state. I distributed bottles to our volunteer fire departments, volunteer ambulance corps, and police departments throughout our district, from Pittsford to Hornell. This list doesn’t include all of our frontline workers, but this was the least I could do to show appreciation for those who risk their lives for the safety of our community.
At the same time, my staff and I have continued working full time to answer your calls, letters, and emails. Legislative work has also continued. I have introduced bills and continue to attend statewide meetings, public hearings, and speaking to government classes via Zoom. I anticipate the Assembly will return to session soon. I am not sure if we will be in Albany or voting remotely.
We are now beginning the process of re-opening our state. Our District Office has resumed normal business hours (Monday – Friday, 9AM – 4PM). Although we will remain closed to visitors for the time being, you can always reach us at 585-218-0038 or ByrnesM@nyassembly.gov. Please stay safe by continuing to practice social distancing and proper hand washing.
