Callahans: The Ghost of Burger Joints Past

AVON – Fratelli’s recent renovations and expansions have disturbed the ghost of restaurants past that have previously occupied the building at 2995 Lakeville Road. According to one of Fratelli’s three owners, Davide Currenti, many members of the community have noticed the unmistakable, if faded, lettering on the awning as layers are stripped away that reads, “Callahans.”

Google “Fratelli’s Restaurant” and glowing affirmations from UrbanSpoon, Yelp, and Google Reviews appear. It turns out that another unique dining experience lived at the corner of Rte 15 and Rte 52 long before Fratelli’s opened in 1996. Longtime residents of Livingston County remember when Callahans was a popular spot to catch a burger and ice cream in the 1960’s and ’70’s.

Currenti said that many community members have approached him and co-owners Antonio and Roberto Currenti about the rich local history of Fratelli’s and Callahans.

Many locals can fondly remember a time when families could walk up to the window at Callahans and get an old school burger and ice cream cone.

Fratelli’s carries forward the tradition of great food at the Rte 15 and Rte 52 plaza, and continues to serve food throughout renovations. Their alcohol service has taken a temporary break.
