CALEDONIA — After a trying offseason for everyone in the Cal-Mum community, the varsity fall sports teams are back on the field. Here is a quick preview for the Red Raiders’ fall sports.
Varsity Football
Head Coach: John Walther
Coming off of a 6-3 2012 campaign, the varsity football team is looking to continue that success and advance to sectionals this year. With 13 out of 27 players on the current roster being seniors, they certainly have the experience needed to make that type of run. The Raiders travel to Bath on Friday to kick off their 2013 season, before taking on Letchworth in their first league game on Sept. 13th.
Varsity Volleyball
Head Coach: Dave Tytler
The varsity volleyball team had a young team last year and finished the season at 6-12, barely missing sectionals. This season, more than half of the girls on the team are seniors. We can also look forward to underclassmen like sophomores Emily Macdonald and Chelsea Riggi, as well as eighth grader Andrea Coyle to step in and contribute towards what should be a successful season.
Varsity Boys Soccer
Head Coach: Chuck Martelle
The Raiders lost a close 2-1 game in overtime to Attica in non-league action on August 8th to open their season. This is a young team, with a number of underclassmen and even an 8th grader on the team. Luckily for coach Martelle, he has four more non-league games before his team enters league play, travelling to Avon on Sept. 19th.
Varsity Girls Soccer
Head Coach: Chad Schalk
After a 13-2-3 season in 2012, which culminated in losing to Bishop Kearney in sectionals, the Lady Raiders were able to get their revenge on Sept. 4 with a 3-0 win to open the season. Leadership from captains like junior defender Hannah Anderson, senior midfielder/forward Maia Scott and senior goalkeeper Kenna Kosinski will be important early in the season as they’ll be fielding a very young team.
The Raiders looked poised to have a strong fall sports season and give the Cal-Mum community many competitive games they’ll want to see.
