Assemblywoman Marjorie Byrnes (R,C-Caledonia) called out the Assembly Majority in the Environmental Conservation Committee who voted along party lines to block her legislation (A.5101) to establish recycling of solar panels.
Currently, there is no mandatory recycling for discarded solar panels. Across our country, they are increasingly going into landfills. Byrnes had hoped to change that in New York with her bill by creating a nation-leading recycling infrastructure.
“It’s simply wrong for the majority, who claim to be environmentalists, to vote against a bill specifically designed to promote recycling and prevent waste,” said Byrnes. “They are hypocrites who put partisanship ahead of the best interests of our state residents.”
Byrnes said she hopes her colleagues will reconsider the bill in the next legislative session so discarded solar panels will be recycled. She said, “They contain a lot of parts that could be reused. New York State needs to be forward-thinking.”
