CALEDONIA — While the calendar reads 2012, the story at the Caledonia-Mumford Holiday Tournament is still the same as it was the last three years — the York Golden Knights are headed to the championship game of the tourney.
The Golden Knights defeated the Wheatland-Chili Wildcats 59-47, on strong offensive performances from guard Tyler Shutts and forward Andrew Short.
Short supplied 19 points, and was a force on the inside, while Shutts bounced back from his game against Geneseo, to supply 16 points, including two threes.
In addition to the offense, the Golden Knights’ defense came to play, as they allowed only four points in the second quarter.
York head coach Ed Orman felt his team played well against the Wildcats.
“We just played good tonight,” Orman said. “Usually, this game is an ugly game and we’re flat, but tonight we weren’t very flat.”
Orman also spoke about the overall defensive effort of the team.
“We played well defensively for the most part, there a few two-minute lapses, where we made some mistakes in transition, but that’s a good team, too, it’s a team that’s going to win 11, 12, 13 games this year, so defensively we were very good tonight, we took a step forward,” he said.
Getting back to the championship game of the tournament for the Golden Knights was something Shutts said the team had a focus on.
“It was our goal coming in,” Shutts said. “We knew Wheatland-Chili would be real tough, they played Notre Dame really well, so the ultimate goal was to definitely make the championship, but we had to beat Wheatland-Chili first.”
With Wheatland-Chili heading to the consolation game against Oakfield-Alabama, York will match up in the championship game against Cal-Mum once again, a game Orman is looking forward to.
“We’ve heard how great, awesome and unbelievable that Caledonia is and we’re looking forward to finding out where we stack up against them.”
The championship game will take place at 7:30 tomorrow in Caledonia, with the consolation game starting at 6.
