CALEDONIA — The host Caledonia-Mumford boys’ basketball team showed their offensive prowess with a 91-52 victory over Oakfield-Alabama, in the opening round of the 9th annual Cal-Mum Boys’ Basketball Christmas Tournament, earlier tonight.
From the opening tip, when Kyle Kline scored after only two seconds on an uncontested layup, Cal-Mum pushed the tempo, forced turnovers and converted them into fast break points.
Each starter for the Raiders finished with double-digit points, led Madison Suhr’s team- high 15.
“We have been getting a lot of easy buckets in transition off our defense,” Cal-Mum head coach Dan Dickens said. “We aren’t complaining about getting easy buckets. When we can get layups, we are going to take them.”
For as many good shots Cal-Mum took, their defense forced just as many bad shots from Oakfield-Alabama. After keeping the game manageable in the first quarter, Oakfield-Alabama only scraped across nine points in the second quarter, as Cal-Mum opened up their lead to 51-19 at half.
From halftime on, it was smooth sailing for the Red Raiders. Every player for Cal-Mum saw the court which allowed Dickens to rest some of his starters for their next game less than twenty-four hours from now.
With the victory, Cal-Mum will advance to championship game of the tournament to face York. Earlier in the evening, York defeated Wheatland-Chili by a score of 59-47. This will be the fourth consecutive year these two teams will face-off in the championship game. York has won the previous three match ups.
“We haven’t had too much success in the last three against York,” Dickens said. “But we have most of the guys back from last year’s team and hopefully we will have the home-court advantage tomorrow.”
Oakfield-Alabama will play in the consolation game against Wheatland-Chili prior to the championship game. The Hornets hope to get a similar performance out of Hunter Spiotta who had a game-high 25 points and seven three-pointers in the losing effort against Cal-Mum.
