CALEDONIA— The Caledonia Red Raiders took on the Campbell Savona Panthers tonight. It was the second round of sectionals for the two teams, whoever lost was knocked out of the running for a sectional title. Caledonia came out on top, winning 76-47.
Steve Gaffney came up huge for the Red Raiders, scoring a total of 25 points this game. During the second quarter he also made his 1000th point. He has played a total of four years on varsity.
“It’s pretty exciting.” Gaffney said, “It’s really more about the team, we really want to win a sectional title, but that was a point that just came along the way.”
“It’s great for Steve and he has been a good player for me now for four years.” head coach Dan Dickens said. “I think that obviously he is looking forward to a sectional title than anything else.”
Kyle Kline was also a leading scorer tonight with a total of 19 points.
Ryan Dilly from Campbell Savona led his team with 14 points. Mitchell Allen did not trail too far behind him with 11 points. Todd Harrian for the Panthers was also a leading scorer with a total of 9 points and making them all within the last 3 minutes of the game.
“I thought we played pretty good defense,” said Dickens , commenting on tonight’s game. “I thought our transition was really moving tonight, we had a lot of odd number breaks. They play in a league that is a little more slow down tempo, and not that it’s not good basketball; they just play at a slower pace. I’ve seen them twice so I knew that they were going to have trouble keeping up with us. The key for us was pushing the tempo of the game.”
The Caledonia Red Raiders are looking forward to their semi-final match up against the York Golden Knights on Monday.
