CAL MUM – The Raider Regime and Gang Green were out in full force as the Cal-Mum Red Raiders defeated the Avon Braves 61-32 in Wednesday night’s Battle of 5 and 20.
The Braves got off to a slow start in the 1st quarter allowing the Red Raiders to take a commanding 18-4 lead going into the 2nd. The Braves started making some shots and it looked like they might cut into the lead but they could not stop the Red Raiders’ scoring onslaught and finished the 1st half down 19.
“They get really fired up no matter who we’re playing,” said Cal-Mum Head Coach Dan Dickens. “It’s a little disappointing that we only get to play Avon once this year so we wanted to make sure we came out strong for this game.”
The Red Raiders opened the 3rd quarter with a made 3 and that was all she wrote. The Braves only scored 5 in the 3rd as Cal-Mum ran away with the game.
The Red Raiders were led by senior guard Nick Kline with 16 points; senior guards Mitch Cicero and Josh Neff each finished with 10 points. For the Braves, junior Dominic Volpe scored 14 points and junior Gerad Coyne had 6 points.
“The team played great defense tonight, they were really getting up in players’ faces,” said Dickens. “Even the shots Avon made were contested, and our tight defense helped us build a nice cushion early in the game.”
The Raiders next game will be at home against Pavilion on Friday, February 6, time TBA. The Braves next game will be at Livonia on Wednesday, February 11 at 7p.m.
