The Mustangs got off to an early lead before Cal-Mum head coach Dan Dickens was forced to take a timeout, down 10-6.
“I thought Dansville was a lot hungrier than we were in the first four minutes, so we took that quick timeout to remind our guys what they needed to do and get them refocused,” Dickens said.
After that timeout the Red Raiders looked like a different team. They finished that quarter on a 13-3 run, and the game was never in doubt after that.
The Red Raiders defense excelled in the 2-3 zone defense against a Dansville offense that features a few potent shooters. After giving up 10 points in the first four minutes of the game, they gave up just 19 points in the next two and a half quarters.
“[Senior guard] Kurtis Haut is so athletic up front,” Dickens said. “He’s got long arms, he’s quick, and he’s going to disrupt their offense and make it difficult for them.”
Haut was able to score most of his 14 points on breakaway layups coming from turnovers on the other side of the court. Senior forward Chris Wilson also added 17 points for the Red Raiders.
Cal-Mum (4-1) take a few days off before playing at home on Friday against Warsaw.
