CONESUS LAKE — A party boat on Conesus Lake was completely destroyed when it caught fire, and the occupants narrowly escaped injury.
The incident started at around 2 p.m. at the North East end of the lake. No one was injured.
“We had just pushed off the dock and heard a backfire,” said Paul Battaglia, 60, the boat owner. “When we looked back the engine was on fire.”
Battaglia was on the boat, a Harris Pontoon Boat with a 115 horsepower Evinrude motor, with his wife and son.
Battaglia stated that they tried to put the fire out with an extinguisher but could not.
Lakeville Junior Firefighter Jake Maier, 17, on the lake boating at the time, jumped into action and rescued the father and son. The sheriff’s marine office pulled the woman out of the water.
The only parts remaining from the boat are pontoons flipped upside down now being transported to the boat launch.
