LAKEVILLE — A garage and two vehicles were destroyed in a Lakeville fire Sunday evening.
According to Livonia Fire Department Chief Rich Alexander, the department received a call around 10 p.m. of a garage on Route 20A with smoke coming from inside. Crews arrived at the scene within three minutes to find a full fire fueled by leaking fluids, including a gas leak from a Hummer destroyed in the fire.
Alexander said traffic was shut down for about two hours it took fire crews about 20 minutes to get the fire under control. However, the Livonia Town Highway Department had to assist pulling the leaking Hummer out to avoid flareups from the fuel tank. Also, as the building was severely damaged, the highway department also pushed the garage corners in to collapse the building because “we didn’t want anyone to get hurt in a building collapse,” Alexander said.
Aside from the Hummer and other miscellaneous garage items, a 1941 Ford hotrod was also destroyed in the blaze.
Alexander said while they believe the fire was accidental in nature, the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
