GENESEO – According to a press release from Geneseo Police Chief Eric Osganian, a 19-year-old was arrested on Saturday for Discharging a Firearm in the Village, for allegedly firing a BB gun on Court Street, while Geneseo Police were investigating a broken car window.
According to Chief Osganian, community members need to be aware that Geneseo police define a ‘firearm’ differently than the penal law definition, a policy that the Village established years ago due to the intimate quarters in the Village and the risk of injury or property damage from projectiles.

“Most of the complaints we get about the policy come from students who want to use BB guns, but sometimes they don’t realize how the close quarters increase risk of injury,” said Chief Osganian. “For example, small projectiles can ricochet and cause property damage.”
Chief Osganian added that residents should be aware that in the Village, a ‘firearm,’ is considered any barreled implement that fires a projectile, where in the broader penal law a ‘firearm’ is only a shotgun, rifle, or handgun.
