The Mount Morris Career and Technical Education (CTE) Center Cosmetology and Barber Students Give Free Haircuts to Veterans on December 7th, 2022, at 10:15 AM.
Genesee Valley BOCES Mount Morris Career and Technical Education (CTE) Center Students get hands-on experience by giving free haircuts to Veterans and their families. This began in January 2022 because the instructors wanted to make haircuts accessible for Veterans and their families, and the students needed to practice their timing in haircutting.
Monthly, these students come together and provide free haircuts to Veterans. Receiving a haircut makes you feel better about yourself and boosts confidence. This program helps give back to those who served. All 2nd-year students (High School Seniors) take turns attending these events. However, it is led by GV BOCES’s newest program addition, the Barber program. The Barber students all go, and the Cosmetology students rotate. The goal for December is to give out 20+ haircuts.
One of the Instructors, Yvette Seils, says it’s crucial to her to have her students be a part of helping veterans because her father was a Veteran and, before his passing, was very active in the Veterans organizations in Monroe County. When she started working in Mt. Morris, she realized she needed to come to this area. She plans to reach out to other towns and bring the same services to them.
“This work is important for students because it builds their confidence, communication skills, and the feeling you get once you’ve made someone’s day better. These haircuts are free, and the Veterans are so grateful. I’m honored to be a part of this event, teach these students, and watch them become gainfully employed, successful, and licensed in NYS,” said Seils.
The location of this event is 36 Center St., Suite B-2, Warsaw, NY.
