AVON — The Avon Braves won the Section V Class C swimming title for the fourth year in a row.
The team took first in the 200 yard medley relay, the 50 yard freestyle, the 100 yard butterfly, the 200 yard freestyle relay, the 100 yard breaststroke, and the 400 yard freestyle relay.
“As a coach, I am very proud of these athletes for the hard work and dedication they have put in throughout the course of the year,” commented Coach Paganin. “It is great to see them achieve the success that they deserve because of their efforts.”
Following the victory, Paganin was named Coach of the Year.
Junior Trevor McCabe scored a total of 120 points, taking first in both the 100 yard breaststroke and the 50 yard freestyle, and helping his relay squads take first in the 200 yard medley relay and the 200 yard freestyle relay.
McCabe also holds the Class C 100 yard breaststroke record, which he earned in 2016 with a time of 1:00.33.
Senior Marcus Stickel had a great day as well, taking first place in the 100 yard butterfly, third place in the 200 yard freestyle, and contributing to victories in the 400 yard freestyle relay and the 200 yard freestyle relay. Stickel scored 116 points in total.
Also playing a major part in the victory was senior Drew Page, who helped score a total of 55 points for the Braves, placing second in the 200 yard race, fourth in the 100 yard backstroke, and helping the 200 yard medley relay squad take first.
“Our seniors played a huge role in our success this year. I don’t know if I have ever coached a class that has been more dedicated to the team as the group of seniors this year,” commented Paganin. “They have always put the team before self and have become dependable and accomplished athletes. Their talent and leadership will surely be missed next year.”
This championship marks the 15th total sectional title earned by the Braves so far.
