AVON – Volunteers from across the Genesee Valley are teaming up with the Village Of Avon and Lifting Up Livingston Inc., a recently established organization dedicated to helping cancer patients to organize the very first annual St. Patrick’s Day parade for Livingston County.
Grassroots volunteers are putting forth their time and expertise in a joint-effort planning committee, and are currently putting together the day’s activities, parade route, merchants, and entertainment, which offer a great opportunity to stay local rather than driving to Hornell or Rochester for a great time on St. Patty’s Day.
“This is a group of volunteers, the purpose of which goes beyond family fun,” said Kevin Van Allen, a member of the parade committee. “We are strategizing ways to make this a fundraiser for Lifting Up Livingston, but it is equally important to spread awareness about the organization and how it can help.”
The parade will start in the afternoon of March 14 at Avon Central School and head down Clinton Street to Genesee Street. The planning committee is already getting feedback from local merchants and Village officials on sales, shows and special events by the shops, with the intent that the day will support local business and come at no cost to Lifting Up Livingston.
“This has been done on the backs of generous, caring people,” added Van Allen. “The event is a natural fit to help families who are dealing with cancer and get the word out that Lifting Up Livingston exists and is here to help.”
Van Allen added that anyone who wants to volunteer their time to help can visit Lifting Up Livingston’s website.
