BYRNES HONORS FALLEN NATIONAL GUARDSMEN
Assemblywomen Marjorie Byrnes (R,C-Caledonia) spearheaded efforts to pass a Joint Legislative Resolution today in Albany to honor the life, service and legacy of the three National Guardsmen who perished in the medical Black Hawk helicopter crash last week in Mendon, New York. The pilot, Christian Koch, a 20-year veteran of the National Guard and member of the State Police, had been a constituent of the 133rd Assembly District throughout his life growing up in York, New York and living in communities throughout Livingston County.
“People have reached out to me from throughout the community to share personal memories of Christian and the significant impact he had on their life. His service in our National Guard and State Police is remarkable but the personal testimonies of his friendship, goodwill and community involvement far extend past what is listed on his resume. He was a remarkable person, and our entire community mourns with his family,” said Byrnes. “This legislative resolution will ensure that for the entire history of our state, his service will never be forgotten. He will live on in our hearts as well as our history, and I am so honored to have been able to do this on behalf of his family in this time of deepest sorrow.”
The Joint Legislative Resolution also honored Chief Warrant Officer 5 Steven Skoda and Chief Warrant Officer 2 Daniel Prial, both of Rochester, New York. Byrnes partnered with colleagues across the state to move the resolution along as quickly as possible. She and her colleagues spoke on the resolution during its passage in session today. A video of her remarks can be viewed here.
Wanting to do everything she could to thank Koch’s family for their sacrifice and honor Koch’s service, Byrnes also reached out to Congressman Chris Jacobs to obtain a flag that was flown over the United States Capitol in Koch’s honor. The flag will be presented to the family at a future date.
