PERRY— The Livingston County Cycling Club hosted the first of three races in the American Rock Salt Race Series at Perry-Warsaw Airport on Saturday featuring 75 racers and approximately 300-400 in attendance.
David Van Horn and Ken Hall dominated the Men’s Elite Race, jumping out to and early lead and eventually lapping the rest of the field. Van Horn, racing for team Projekt, was able to keep his lead with the help of teammates Eric Curtis, Tom Weichman, Nick Demarchi and Rich Scaduto, who actively disrupted and frustrated the field. Van Horn continued to battle against Hall for the entirety of the race, but pulled ahead during the final sprint to take first place.
The women’s field was equally contested as Rachel Andrews of Once Again Racing and Jennifer Bushover of Bike Donk battled for 40 mins after breaking away from the rest of the field early. Andrews managed to keep Bushover at bay and win in the final sprint of the race.
“This was the first year we have hosted a race on this date, and we were really excited for thewith how it went,” said Race Director Tony Sylor. “We had an excellent fan turn out and the racers put on an amazing show.”
Other winners on the evening included Chris Tirone of Finish Strong/BBC in the Masters, Kevin Chapman of THS Cycling in the Men’s 4, Karen Gurjic in the Women’s 4/5, and Anthony Camagna of Bike Loft East in the Men’s 5.
The next race in the series will be held Perry-Warsaw Airport at 3 p.m. on July 21, follwed by a race in Avon the following day.
