LEXINGTON, Ky.— American Rock Salt’s mine rescue team, Team Liberty, took home second place in the novice team event at the National Metal and Nonmetal Mine Rescue Competition, which took place in Lexington, Kentucky.
The novice team competition includes teams that have competed in the Mine Rescue Competition for the first time. Overall, Team Liberty placed 33 out 40 teams. Joe Bucci Jr., the environmental health and safety coordinator at American Rock Salt, said that Team Liberty had a very respectable performance for their first appearance.
“It was a great environment for [the team] to test their skills, learn new things and to network with other mine rescue teams,” Bucci said. “Competing at this level against such a tough field has only made the team that much more ready to handle an emergency situation if it occurs. American Rock Salt is very proud of these guys and appreciate their hard work and dedication.”
The mine rescue team trains diligently, not only to compete in competitions, but more importantly, to be ready at a moments notice if an emergency were to happen in the mines.
