Police are investigating the theft of 12 cars from the Hertz store on Ajax Road in the Town of Gates overnight between Saturday, December 10 and 11.
According to police, the chain link fence which enclosed the cars was cut by a group of individuals, as seen on video, and a Chevy Suburban on the lot was used to move some vehicles out of the way of the exit. The group had keys to the cars that were stolen. The Chevy Suburban was also used to push a giant hole in the fence.
The theft was discovered Sunday morning by an employee who noted the missing vehicles and the hole in the fence. Reported initially as 17 vehicles missing, after checking rental records, it was found that the accurate number of stolen vehicles was 12.
Six of the cars were recovered the following day, undamaged, and were returned to the rental agency. Ajax Rd. is off Buell Rd, near the Rochester airport, an area in which car thefts seem more frequent than in other locations, and last year, a man was shot and killed as youths tried to steal his car. The teens were arrested and pled guilty in that incident.
Police say this is an ongoing investigation. If anyone with information is asked to contact Gates PD at 247-2262 or email at tips @ townofgates.org, please don’t hesitate to contact Gates PD.
